THUNDER BAY – The North Superior Workforce Planning Board (NSWPB) has been providing insight into the local and regional labour market for the past twenty years. This evening past and present board members, staff and community stakeholders will be gathering together to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the organization. The occasion will also be used as an opportunity to discuss the Ring of Fire initiative. A panel consisting of Deputy Minister David de Launay, MNDM, David Paul Achneepineskum CEO of Matawa First Nations Management, Glenn Nolan, VP Aboriginal Affairs, Noront Resources, Max Skudra, Director of Research & Government Relations, Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and John Mason, Project Manager, Mining Services, Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission will be providing insight into the progress being made on the project.

NSWPB Executive Director Madge Richardson stated, “We are very grateful to the numerous people who have supported the NWSPB initiatives throughout the years. The hundreds of volunteer hours and dedication have contributed to the ongoing success and growth of the NSWPB. ‘Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy.  You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.’ Thank you to those who have chosen to work with us to improve the quality of life in our communities through workforce development.”

In 2015 the NSWPB was awarded the contract to deliver the Local Employment Planning Council (LEPC). Through the guidance of NSWPB, the LEPC has been able to expand the labour market services available locally and regionally. The staffing complement has increased from three people to seven including an in-house- labour market analysis. Recent projects have included:

  • Community Labour Market Reports for the communities in the LEPC catchment area;
  • Career Link Integrated Calendar which provides a convenient location for service providers to list upcoming events and workshops;
  • Employer Resource Link an online and phone in contact with employers;
  • Baakaakonaanan Ishkwaandemonan: Opening Doors for You, a reward program for employers to increase cultural awareness in employment practices;
  • Apprenticeship Consortium Guide outlines an alternative for small to medium sized businesses who wish to hire apprentices.

Upcoming events are:

  • Indigenous Workplace Inclusion: Strategies for Moving Forward conference to be held this November 20 and 21 at the Victoria Inn. This event features experts from the field of Human Resource Management and Indigenous Inclusion. For more information visit nswpb.ca/lepc/iwi
  • EmployerOne Survey conducted from October 16 to December 8, 2017. The results provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the local and regional labour market and provides evidence for future planning and decision making locally, regionally and provincially.
