THUNDER BAY – Premier Kathleen Wynne is scheduled to join Ontario Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault and federal Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott in Thunder Bay on Thursday to make what is described as a significant announcement.

The premier's office confirmed her visit to Thunder Bay in an itinerary shared late Wednesday afternoon.

The federal government had issued a media advisory earlier in the day, alerting that Philpott and Thibeault would be making an announcement alongside Wataynikaneyap Power chief executive officer Margaret Kenequanash at the Valhalla Inn.

Wataynikaneyap Power is a consortium of more than 20 remote Northwestern Ontario First Nations that is planning to connect 18 of them to the provincial energy grid by 2024. The group had been chosen by the province last year to construct the lines for the 1,800 kilometre project.

The first phase of their plan would increase energy capacity from Ignace to Pickle Lake, which the consortium last year said was expected to begin construction in 2018 with targeted completion in 2020. Reinforcing those lines is a required first step before extending further north.
