A Win for the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce

At the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s (CCC) Annual General Meeting and Convention, held Sept. 17 to 19 in Regina, the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce submitted a resolution, entitled “Make the Ring of Fire a Priority of National Significance.” This resolution recommends that the federal government treat the Ring of Fire as a project of national priority, that it work with governments, industry and community partners to build capacity of Indigenous peoples in the region, and that it actively promote the Ring of Fire in the global arena as a trade and investment opportunity.

This resolution received support from 94.9% of the 400+ delegates in attendance from across the country and now becomes the official policy of the CCC.

“It was great to see our resolution about the Ring of Fire, a project located in Northern Ontario, be debated, voted on and successfully passed by delegates from across Canada and know that these delegates see this as a project of national significance,” said Tracy Nutt, Chair of the Board of the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce. “This clearly demonstrates that the Ring of Fire is not just a vital project for Ontario, but for the entire nation,” she said.

The Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce also collaborated with its fellow chambers to support a number of policy resolutions which included issues such as infrastructure investment for mining sector growth and scaling up Canadian firms.

All resolutions receiving the support of the delegates at the convention now become the official policy of the Canadian chamber and will be pursued with the federal government over the coming months.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce helps shape public policy and decision-making to the benefit of businesses, communities and families across Canada with a network of over 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, representing 200,000 businesses of all sizes in all sectors of the economy and in all regions.

The chamber thanks its Ring of Fire Task Force for all its hard work in developing this policy resolution.
