Why a Mushkegowuk Infrastructure Corridor?

How can Mushkegowuk participate in the Ring of Fire economic benefits without interfering with Matawa’s Framework Agreement?

That’s why Mushkegowuk decided to take the lead and investigate the possibility of developing an “Infrastructure Corridor”.

What’s an infrastructure corridor?

It’s an easement type corridor. We would lease or collect some form of royalties from operators such as rail companies for the right to cross our Treaty lands via our corridor. We would also transmit energy for our people and our economic partners. That revenue source could finance our own community infrastructure, like water, waste water and community roads.

This spring, Mushkegowuk will begin reviewing the economics of such a corridor.

What is Happening Now?

Currently Mushkegowuk Council is securing funds to begin developing a Conceptual Plan (see the Presentation below).  The development of this concept will rely heavily on discussions and consultations with the Mushkegowuk First Nations that could be impacted.  It will also take a first  look at the economic viability of the project.  After the concept is developed, Pre-feasibility and Feasibility Studies will need to be done to determine environmental and economic sustainability.  These will again be completed with community involvement and consultation.
