Airfield upgrade complete at Webequie First Nation

WEBEQUIE FIRST NATION, ONT. — The federal government has announced completion of two projects in Webequie First Nation in northern Ontario, one the replacement of the community airport’s electrical system and the other a set of housing projects funded by the government.

The work at the airfield included the replacement of the edge lights on the main runway, taxiway and apron as well as various other electrical system rehabilitation projects such as new electrical cabling and a new lighting control panel, said a recent release.

The $1-million project was funded through Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program.

The same day, federal officials visited the community to mark the completion of recent housing projects that will provide homes for 29 families, said a release.

The new housing stock includes 14 new modular homes, two new four-plexes, five single-family homes and renovations to 14 existing homes.

The housing projects were funded through the Government of Canada’s Community Wellbeing Pilot Project, launched in February 2016. The pilot project is said to be an “innovative whole-of-government approach to community development that focuses on community-identified needs.”

Webequie First Nation is located 540 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ont. and is accessible by air year-round or by seasonal winter road. The traditional territory of Webequie First Nation falls within the area known as the Ring of Fire, noted the release.

Indigenous Services Canada provided $6.4 million in funding for the housing while Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation contributed $3 million.
