Message: Re: First Nations Declare Moratorium on Ring of Fire Development

I see NOT is down 8% today but I think this is pretty great news actually. When the RIA was announced in Feb 2020 I expected it to take years.

This moratorium is being called for by Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, and Neskantaga First Nations. Only Neskantaga has land in the area of the road.

In this media release they say, “by acting with duplicity behind our backs in collaboration with Ontario”. This sounds promising.

This makes me think there will be Ring funding in the Feds’ budget on April 19th.

Matawa First Nations is made up of 9 Nations, which Neskantaga is one. Don’t forget Matawa First Nations put out a favourable media release in Feb 2021: “development of the north in Ontario is of global and national importance to the economic recovery and security of Canada and Ontario in a post-COVID-19 world”. (http://www.matawa.on.ca/matawa-issues-call-for-canada-to-establish-regional-and-first-nation-partnerships-in-covid19-economic-recovery-and-security/)

The eco warriors might have shot themselves in the foot. First of all, this RIA is just for a damn road, if I were them I wouldn’t be going so hard with calling for a moratorium for just a damn road, I mean keep some powder dry for when NOT apply for mining permits right?

Kind of hilarious that the eco justice lawyers called for the RIA and now it looks to be working in favour of NOT getting through assessments without being bogged down for years: (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/ring-of-fire-impact-assessment-1.5466381)
