The True Faith - in support of Herb

I paste below something I wrote last year concerning the truth of Christianity and why some people refuse to embrace it.  Since this is the  "Off Topic" portion of Noront forum, please accept this in the spirit in which it is given - for the eternal well-being of humans, who, no matter how much wealth they make through Noront, will end up having invested poorly if they made no investment relating to their eternal soul.

Some of this may sound harsh, but if someone were to 'rudely' yell at you and wake you up to warn you that your house was on fire and to tell you to get out, you might realize later that such 'rudeness' was well-intended and given in a spirit of caring.  Nevertheless - Jesus warned that throwing one's 'pearls' of divine wisdom (divine because it is given by God and not 'figured out' by our intellect) will, if the persons intend to remain swine-like, infuriate them to turn and tear to pieces (if they can) those who offer divine truth. (Matthew 7:6)

If you have been taught that the Bible is full of errors, being based on copies of many divergent texts, and that we cannot reliably know what the writers of Scripture actually wrote in the first place, then you have been lied to, and deceived in the worst way.

The textual integrity of the Bible far surpasses that of any other ancient texts that we have, and was carefully transmitted down through the ages by careful and conscientious scribes and scholars.  We have more evidence of the textual authenticity and integrity of Scripture than we do of Homer’s “Iliad” or “Odyssey”, Plato’s “Republic”, Caesar’s “Gallic Wars”, or even Shakespeare’s plays.  I suggest, if you have been misled in this regard, that you begin by reading some of the writings of F. F. Bruce, Paul Little, or Josh McDowell, recommended at the end of this book.[1]

If you believe that the message of the Bible is not God’s sure and certain communication to mankind, then you must believe that it contains the erroneous ideas of humans.  If you believe that, then how can you discern which parts are eternal truth, and which parts are men’s erroneous opinions?  You cannot, without the prideful presumption that you, more than the writers of Scripture, know the mind of God.  You may not like the fact that the Bible commands wives to obey their husbands, or declares homosexuality to be a damnable sin (and capital crime), or forbids women from being pastors, or claims to be the inspired word of God.  Nevertheless, those are your own prejudices against God’s word.

Those who take the position that the Bible is a collection of human guesses about God and God’s will, are ignoring the many claims made by the speakers and writers of Scripture -- that they were conveying the actual message of God to humankind.  If this is not true, then these men were liars and deceivers of the worst sort.  And, we should throw out the Bible altogether.  But the writers of Scripture did not give the readers the possibility of credibly claiming that the writers meant for the Bible to be interpreted as a collection of human guesses about God’s will.

Consequently, anyone who takes the position that some parts of the Bible are inspired and other parts are not, are denying entirely the authority of the Bible as God’s word.  Also, to hold that some parts are inspired and other parts are not is to make yourself a judge of what is a acceptable behavior and what is not, and to declare the Bible to be a ‘suggestion book’ from which you can pick and choose.  This also denies the power of God to accurately communicate his will to humanity.  To believe that God is incapable of adequately communicating his will, is the same as believing that God is not God, but some impotent, other-worldly figure.  Such a belief is for fools.  “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1)

Many people have been confronted with the proofs of the authenticity and integrity of the Bible, but have still refused to accept it as God’s word.  Ultimately, the only thing that keeps a person from accepting the Bible as God’s authoritative word to mankind is an unwillingness to do God’s will.  Jesus said, “If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.”  (John 7:17 NIV)  The Spirit of God will, for any fair-minded individual, who is sincerely willing to obey God, speak to them through God’s word, the Bible, as they read it or hear it.  They will realize, as did the early Christians in Thessalonica, that these are not the words of mere men, but words which God inspired and directed these men to write.

And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.  (1st Thessalonians 2:13 NIV)

If you are unwilling to be fair-minded in considering the statements of Scripture, then it is because you are unwilling to obey God (no matter what excuses you might offer to the contrary).  For you, there is no hope of realizing the joy of a life that is satisfying to yourself and to others and to God.  For you, there may be the passing pleasures of this life in some degree, along with the sorrows it has to offer as well, but not the satisfaction.  You will always be seeking something more, something better, but never able to find it.

Finally, you will die, and then have to stand before God and be judged one day for what you did with your life.  Your opportunity to embrace God’s purpose for your life will have come and gone.  You will be sentenced to eternal misery for wasting your life, while seeing those who embraced God’s will, being accepted by God into an eternity of joy.  You can call this myth and ‘fairy tales’, but in your conscience, you know that this is true.[2]  This book is not for you and will do you no good, if this is your state of mind.

But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.  God “will give to each person according to what he has done.”  To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.  But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.  (Romans 2:5-8 NIV)

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.  Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.  (2nd Corinthians 5:10-11 NIV)

An hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.  (John 5:28-29 New American Standard Version [hereafter “NASV”])

There shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.  In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men.  (Acts 24:15-16 NASV)

For we will all stand before God's judgment seat.  It is written: “As surely as I live,” says the Lord, “every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.”  So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.  (Romans 14:10-12 NIV)

[2]  “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-- his eternal power and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.  For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.  Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:18-22 NIV)
