How many friends do you have on Facebook? How many people are in your class or school right now? Now, imagine if FIFTEEN of them disappeared – every day. Pretty soon, you would lose someone you know. In the United States, that’s how many people die from texting related driving incidents – every day.
We started this campaign to help students see that breaking the habit of texting while driving can save lives, maybe theirs, maybe someone they know. As teenagers, we text all the time and our phones are an important connection to our friends and families. Though while it's important to stay in touch, no message is more important than arriving safe at our destination. We believe in responsible texting.
It's our hope that the message of responsible texting and driving will catch on as a peer-to-peer campaign. To help it succeed, we've planned an event, the Rock 2 Live Music Festival and school fundraiser.
The campaign to create a National Day of Awareness Against Texting & Driving started in September 2011. Researching the topic online, we found that there were so many others who believed in helping to educate others about responsible texting. As we reached out to those in our school, community, state, and national groups, we were amazed at the outpouring of support from all sides. Our movement was starting to take shape and grow quite rapidly.
At first, this was going to be a relatively small event at our high school, but after some considerable support from artists, organizations, other schools, companies, and a production company we had the chance to make this a national caliber event. The Rock 2 Live Music Festival and school fundraiser was born.
We hope that your school will join us in a unique opportunity to raise awareness – and much needed funds for your local programs.
