Facebook bought out WhatsApp for $19 billion even though it produced very little revenue. Facebook feels that they can help WhatsApp grow into a huge business and make it finacially sound down the road.

They also get rid of some competition.

I think the same thing could happen with POET. Once a big company sees that POET is commercially viable, an offer could be on the table that POET finds fair and accepts.
