I watched this video last night (link below) of a presentation by John Bowers of UCSB (Univ. of Cal. Santa Barbara). He has a very impressive resumé and even worked at AT&T and Honeywell (like Dr. Taylor) before he went to UCSB in 1987. During the introduction in the video he is descibed as a leader in his field. Taking into account their field of study and the associations they both are part of (OSA, IEEE), not to mention the two employers they have in common, I wouldn't be surpised if they are at least familiar with one anothers work.
The video is quite interesting and he is a good speaker. The video has some good information regarding the power consumption a data centers around the world today to complement the discussion this morning. Its long at just under an hour but I recommend it.
There were a couple interesting comments in the video. Near the beginning he made the comment that Silicon Photonics is not really about the silicon. Its about making photonic integrated circuits using CMOS processing technology in a CMOS fab. This is a huge point as this is exactly the problem that Dr. Taylor and his team at POET have solved.
After watching the video I am confident that POET has a great future.
