GlobalFoundries by the end of the year will add 600 jobs to its workforce at the Malta semiconductor plant, a top company official said Thursday.

Mike Russo, GlobalFoundries' senior manager, U.S. government relations & regulatory affairs, told the Times Union that the plant, known as Fab 8, has more than 3,000 workers, with another 3,000 construction workers also on site as it expands the facility.

"We'll be at 3,600 at the end of the year on the operational side," he said.

"This is part of the infrastructure improvements to operate the current fab," he said. "We're not fully ramped up yet."

When the fab was first announced, projections were for 1,200 jobs. But the plant was quickly expanded, and is now "the most advanced facility in the world," Russo said during remarks preceding the ribbon-cutting. "We're the only true contract chipmaker in the country."

Russo also said that $15 billion has been invested in Fab 8 so far.
