Did you see the part where SilTerra has installed jointly owned equipment for volume manufacturing in their plant and how quickly the installation was done? That expansion would have required a high level of certainty. So I believe that your non tech judgement in this regard has little merit. But as you say I was convinced by Geoff Taylor that the GaAs platform was a breakthrough so my opinion has very little relevance as well.
But, the people who are actively involved in the commercialization of the optical interposer platform are not lab scientists. I think that you should consider this in your opinion.
On the tech side consider that they are working with an unnamed company for up to 16 lanes. They are optimizing the interposer not just for 100G but for a one size fits all platform. I believe that if they are going to work with 16 lanes and are not constrained by frequency then they are working with that company on terabit level applications.
