The Copetti era was more about promoting something that was still far into the future at that time. I think he tried to promote something that, is extraordinary and very disruptive, but was not quite finished. I think they were unable to convince anyone, even the rumoured Apple, that this would be ready, even with their help back at that time, soon enough. Another point would be the reality of bringing something to market that would change practically the entire infrastructures of what was present in the world at that time. There would have likely been huge resistance to change as many companies would have been burdened to change, and who would change first? Who would have enough customers immediately to adopt GaAs? It doesn't mean that idea is buried as Poet was close. It is still market resistance to such a change. It would only be compelling to change when "new industry standards" can be me for "monolithic" devices as what Suresh has spoken of.
Poet's OI is a disruptive compromise that can extend the current device market and eventually move it to the monolithic goal where possible. All that Copetti could do was promote the idea and see if they were any takers. If so, the company would likely have been sold at too low of a price to satisfy investors. Possibly the reason why Sheldon bailed. Copetti still knew he had something good, but he could not do the job (scientifically) to take this to another level. At the THM, Ajit Manocha did say in front of the shareholders that were present that Copetti was in over his head. Ajit came aboard, brought in Suresh to sort Poet out, and then Poet had to work hard to actually get something commercially ready. So everything has to stay silent and under wraps. Poet is going inside its customers devices and it is not up to Poet or its customers to tout this innovation yet until they launch out of the gate. Behind the scenes, there was a lot to coordinate and any leaks would be 'premature" and invite other astute innovators to gain more detailed knowledge of Poet is doing. The floodgates, in my opinion, will happen when Poet and its customers get the green light and come out fast and furious from the gate to give any competition a chance of interfering. In fact, I feel that this silence until the very last moment will catch others off guard and allow Poet to maintain a pole position a few years out after launch. Maybe after that time, they will be ahead for a disruptive phase 2.0 in a multitude of markets. What Poet has in the OI is something that is unversally pervasive, scalable and more importantly speed agnostic. Suresh will know when it is the right time. Until then all that we can say is "are we ready yet?".
