Conjuring up who that investor may have been is interesting. I tend to think it was just a financing whereby the ourchaser sells some stock short, eventually covers with the purchased stock and keeps the warrants. 

You may find that cynical, but some such method has a good chance of having been employed. The percentage return for the investor is huge. Money is expensive!
