You can also make the analogy that they are drilling through a sheet of paper standing on end 2km long Xmetres wide with an unknown depth.  It is near impossible to drill down through the heart the the entire 2m to depth from top to bottom as the vein will never be a straight line, and therefore they need to drill through it's side numerous times to get it's true outline.
