Re: plasma used for thrust: not a bad idea at all.
It seems that some people are developing plasma thruster for spaceships. It is still early stage. Getting the power is a big challenge.

Now, could we imagine a plasma thruster on planes?
There seems to be some research in this field as well:

It definitely would be a way to fly airplanes without greenhouse gas emissions, but again, very early stage and there would be significant challenges 1) to get enough power from the torch while managing the weight of the plasma system and 2) having enough energy stored onboard for the whole flight.
