My understanding is that hydrogen is most often used as a secondary gas in a multi-gas mix, as it can help adjust the characteristics of the plasma, such as voltage and energy. Nitrogen and Argon I believe are the preferred primary gases, with hydrogen and helium as the key secondary gases.
