Message: Steel tundish heating

Dear hogey,

Thank you for your request.

I cannot give more information than what have been disclosed in press releases. However, tundish heating is one of the many possible uses of our high-power torches.

"The main functions of the tundish are to be a steel reservoir between the ladle and the mold, and in the case of multistrand casters to distribute the liquid into the molds. The first item is of special importance during ladle change. In addition to being a reservoir of liquid steel, the tundish is more increasingly used as a metallurgical reactor vessel aimed at improving control of steel cleanness, temperature, and composition.” (Seppo Louhenkilpi, in “Treatise on Process Metallurgy: Industrial Processes”, 2014).

Conventional tundish heaters use gas burners for keeping the steel hot. The use of a plasma torch would help a steel mill reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

Hope it helps,

Clémence Bertrand-Bourlaud on behalf of Peter.
