 Another option for hydrogen production with potentially low GHG emissions is the decomposition of methane from natural gas sometimes referred to as pyrolysis. This process decomposes methane into its elements hydrogen and solid carbon (CH4 → C + 2 H2). The carbon is not combusted within this process; i.e. the GHG CO2 is not produced. Instead, the provided solid carbon can be disposed under demarcation from the biosphere (i.e. GHG neutral). Alternatively, the carbon could be used as a raw material (e.g. as carbon black [13][14]) contributing to the short or long term atmospheric CO2 inventory.
