A well-established process to produce steel (Direct reduced Iron) requires the use of natural gas or coal as a reactant to reduce the iron ore to metallic iron. This produces CO2 in substantial quantities. The most important future development for this technology is to use only hydrogen as a reductant, eliminating all sources of carbon. However, the hydrogen must be heated to very high temperatures, something that plasma torches can do using only electricity as an energy source.
