I understand how my use of the word "supply" could be misinterpreted. As mentioned I was meaning the gas hunter producers. I looked up Gaz Metro (cool site with the blue flame) and see they transport and distribute to the final customer. Like Hydro that is a very common situation where governments choose to own the distribution system.

I still think however that they will choose to leave the risk taking and the expertise in exploring and developing gas wells to the private companies who do that best.

Anyway this is all moot to our sp. However you did mention that if gaz metro ever did have designs on ownership that most likely the shareholders would benefit, just another possible player in the takeover scenarios.
