Tom Bundtzen, president of Pacific Rim Geological Consulting and president of the Alaska Miners Association, said optimism has returned to miners statewide after gold prices that dipped in the mid-1990s closed up exploration opportunities.

His company has been busy across the state, including work for Placer Dome looking for calcium carbonate, needed to neutralize acid from Donlin Creek's high sulfur gold ore.

World demand not only for gold but for other minerals and metals, has boosted exploration, Bundtzen said.

"What mining is seeing is the same in the energy sector," he said. "We're seeing a reflection."
