MINING ACT: Dialog extended into next year

TORONTO — The Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has extended the deadline for discussion of planned changes to the Ontario Mining Act. Consultations have been extended to Jan. 15, 2009. The change was made, said the government, to give First Nations more time to "discuss, consider and provide input".

"Ontario wants to make sure its Mining Act promotes balanced, sustainable development that is respectful of Aboriginal communities and private land holders, while supporting a vibrant industry and competitive investment climate," the province said in a news release. "This summer and fall, the ministry held a series of public and stakeholder meetings, as well as focused discussions with the minerals industry, municipalities and other stakeholders. It is currently engaging with First Nations and Métis leaders, as well as First Nations communities across Ontario."

The province intends to have the new act in force before the end of 2009. See also www.MNDM.gov.on.ca.
