Kinross takeover turns spotlight on Yukon
It's not exactly the Klondike Gold Rush, Part II, but Kinross Gold's decision to buy out a Yukon miner has turned investors and analysts to looking for other companies in the northern territory that could attract a bid.
Kinross is buying the 90 per cent it didn't already own of Underworld Resources (one of the great corporate names) in a deal that values the company at $137.5-million. It will give Kinross full control of Underworld's White Gold project.
Given Tye Burt's reputation as a savvy acquiror, the betting is that others will follow in his footsteps to grab Yukon projects. White Gold is located about 100 kilometers south of Dawson City, the historic centre of Yukon gold mining, in the Tintina gold belt.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the belt is a 1,200-kilometre long, 200 km wide arc that extends westward from northern British Columbia to southwest Alaska
Wellington West analysts Paolo Lostritto and Ryan Walker point to Victoria Gold, Atac Resources and Golden Predator Royalty & Development Corp.
So far, the market is betting on Atac and Golden Predator, with both stocks up significantly Thursday.
