Was it the hedge funds that drove the price of gold to its 1980 peak?

Or was it the retail mania? In other words, can a retail driven gold mania push the juniors up too in the manic phase? When, as Dave Morgan says is when 90% of the gains take place in the last 10% of the bull market.
