Japanese companies have decided not to participate in a refinery project in Libya, trade minister Akira Amari said Friday.
The Japanese firms wanted to buy energy stakes in exchange for cooperation in refinery technology, but the Libyan government rejected this request, said the minister of economy, trade and industry.
Amari didn't say which companies had been considering joining the project. The Nikkei earlier Friday reported that a coalition of five Japanese firms, including Nippon Oil Corp. (5001.TO), Inpex Holdings Inc. (1605.TO) and Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. (1662.TO), were in negotiations to construct an oil refinery in Libya.
