It could be a matter of pure politics. Although it's hard to believe the board wouldn't know the truth behind this scenario, he might simply "need" to push hard here. Creating a dog and pony show that would hopefully reflect better upon him than not doing anything. Doing "nothing" after such a big mistake would certainly make him weaker politically.
