Besides that the scenarios being described would not make much sense to an "Apple" (whoever)

Why have to expend an enormous amount of money to buy a company like EDig just to get it's IP (patents) when you could settle their lawsuits for much less, get completely licensed, and have access and use of all EDig's IP?
