Suppose you take a short term capital gain in 2009, then get caught up chasing it in 2010 as more developments unfold, and time it poorly taking a big loss.

You still owe taxes on the 2009 trade and now are in dire straights for 2010. Best be careful on the timing to market if you're day trading.
