In plain English, defense are saying that a Markman Ruling in this case will indeed work as the key to resolving most of the cases, and DM has agreed that should happen by " THE FALL OF 2007"...

Recalling that a Markman Ruling the only question left is "HOW MUCH" is owed to the plaintiff, (see, Sandisk vs. SMT Microelectronics decision of 9th Circuit Court of Appeal).

We now know that these cases should last no longer than Fall of this year...

The problem with defense proposal was that they wanted their Mini-Markman Hearing before they had even filed their ANSWERS, and DM called them on that and the Court agreed and ordered them to file their ANSWERS...
