The use of Flash memory is seen by the Company as the most practical solution for storing data on removable and interchangeable modules, given that other memory technologies either require battery back-up, draw too much power, are physically too large, or are mechanically or magnetically sensitive.

"After spending years of hard work developing this technology it's very exciting to see that the patent office has seen the value of what we've developed, and has granted this first patent. When I first conceived of the idea for the Flashback recorder, it was apparent that Flash memory was going to be viewed as a mainstream means of data storage. We were interested in enhancing its appeal by working it into user-friendly applications with widespread consumer interest, and now feel we are being rewarded for our work," said Elwood Norris, Chairman of Norris and the inventor of the Flashback product.

Norris' now-patented technology is showcased in an award-winning hand-held digital voice recorder called Flashback(R). This 3 oz. recorder plays recorded material instantly, performs variable-speed playback and features on-board voice editing capabilities. It is currently capable of storing 18 or 36 minutes of recording time on ultra-compact, removable memory cartridges, SoundClips(R), using only 1MB or 2MB of Flash memory, respectively.

Although Norris' initial products showcase voice recording, the technology covered in this patent is ideal for all types of sound and data recording. The Norris technology can be used to store data, sound, and images on Flash memory in a number of products, and uncomplicates compression, storage and transfer of data across platforms.

"The technology covered by this patent can be used in many digital recording products and applications including telephone answering machines, digital cellular phones, pagers, fax machines, copiers, still cameras, motion pictures cameras, and more. This is the universal medium, and the implications of this patent for the industry are huge."

Leon Malmed, Senior Vice President of SanDisk Corporation, said, "The usage of Flash in digital recording technology is a major breakthrough as it totally eliminates all mechanically moving components, improves the reliability, improves the functionality and enables interaction with computers, telephones, fax machines, still cameras, motion cameras, etc. SanDisk is pleased to be working closely with Norris in developing the next generations of voice recording technology."

See CompactFlash. , said, "The CFA is pleased that Norris Communications is broadening the applications for CompactFlash(TM) to hand-held digital voice recorders. CompactFlash is being designed into hand-held computers, digital cameras, cellular phones, pagers, etc. Norris adds one more device to this array of products using CompactFlash to store and interchange data."

The Company intends to license their patented technology to other organizations interested in combining together to build a market for removable Flash memory module applications which will allow people a universal format for storing and moving data of any type. The Norris Flash File System, a proprietary system created to transparently store and manipulate all types of data on Flash memory, is also available under licensing parameters set by the Company.

The physical patent will arrive at Norris on February 13. The Company will be making a formal presentation of all the ramifications of this patent to the members of the Compact Flash Association at the Association's next formal meeting in mid March.
