I am not trying to be a wise guy--you were at the SHM--I was not but, if your cell phone is in your pocket how does it know what the lighting situation is? It is always dark in my pockets, I think. Also, would having other things in your pocket like keys or coins affect the sensor's ability to decide what the level of sound is? I have no idea--just thinking out loud.
