NFC is not related to flash, nor is flash related to NFC, they are two separate items. Yes, you could have both on the same chip, to save space and power, but one does not need the other.
NFC has been around for almost 10 years now. It is similar to Bluetooth, in that two devices can communicate with each other wirelessly. NFC has a much shorter transmission distance, just a couple of feet at the most. Bluetooth has a much larger range. You want a very short distance for NFC, since it is to be used for financial transactions.
NFC is now a standard ISO protocol. Lots of companies are now making NFC chips. Just as you now see bluetooth in many devices, soon you will see NFC.
Rumor has it that Apple may have NFC in the next iphone that may be announced on Oct 4th.
Mobile applications will have access to NFC protocol layer on mobile devices, thus Nunchi could use NFC , say to synchronize two mobile devices, etc.
