The following excerpt is from an article written at the Johns Hopkins University titled, Gateway Design for Data Gathering Sensor Networks.
It is considerably easier to develop and deploy a wireless
sensor network (WSN) application today than it was a few
years ago.
There is however a missing piece in this otherwise encouraging
trend. What we still lack are software and hardware
platforms for WSN gateways that are as easy to use and deploy
as those that we have for motes. One needs to develop custom software for
the gateway to communicate with the back-end servers as
well as the sensor network. Stop
