Shorts don't expire. A "Short"-er has sold shares they don't own. By borrowing on margin They then have to buy "long" shares to Cover. They make money when they cover with shares purchased at a lower price they sold. Shorts will cover when the stock price rises to too much of a loss to cover...on margin based on the securities they hold in their account.
