Background of Allan H. McGirr

Allan McGirr is an award-winning public speaker and communications professional. His background

includes more than 30 years of experience in corporate and political communications, marketing, investor

relations and issues management.

Allan began his career on Parliament Hill in the mid 1970s serving as a speechwriter and press secretary

for the Ministers of Indian Affairs, Public Works and Science and Technology. In the 1979 election

campaign, he served as an advisor and organizer on Prime Minister Trudeau’s National Tour.

In 1993, Allan was Communications Director for a national political party and spearheaded all

communications, fundraising and marketing objectives resulting in party’s representation in the House of

Commons increasing from 1 to 53 members. He was also responsible for “coaching” the party leader,

Preston Manning, in the 1993 national Leader’s debate.

Through more than 20 years of experience as an investment professional and an investor relations

consultant, Allan has written, designed and delivered hundreds of public presentations, speeches and

seminars on investment, financial and public affairs topics reaching diverse audiences that generated new

clients and substantial new business. He also provided a weekly radio commentary on investment issues

and wrote monthly articles for a local magazine.

Allan has consulted to a wide range of high technology companies and has designed and developed

numerous presentations on behalf of CEOs and CFOs. He is adept at helping senior management to

explain their corporate “story” to portfolio managers, analysts, investors and the media in a compelling and

comprehensible manner in a way that has enhanced share value, attracted new investment and generated

media coverage. He has also coached senior executives and provided media and presentation training to

improve their communications performance in front of key audiences.

Allan has been a member of Toastmasters since 2002 and in that time, he has been awarded

Toastmaster of the Year and has won numerous speech competitions at the club, area and division

levels. At the provincial level in November 2005, Allan placed first in the Table Topics (impromptu

speaking) Speech Contest and third in the Humorous Speech Contest. He has established a strong

reputation for engaging his audiences with humour while delivering a thought-provoking message. He is

currently President of Vancouver Toastmaster Club 59, one of the largest Toastmaster clubs in Canada.

Allan obtained his B.A. from Carleton University in Ottawa and has completed the Canadian Securities

Course. In his spare time, Allan is an ardent movie buff and enjoys traveling with his wife Trudi. Once a

year, he competes in a fishing contest on a small lake in Ontario where for the past 25 years, he has

consistently demonstrated that he’s the world’s most incompetent fisherman.
