Of course, the ultimate results would come from the labs, but you would need to wait for several weeks before the results come back. In addition, sometimes re-tests would be carried out, which add a few more weeks, to confirm the results.
It would be blind trust to depend totally on the hand-held analyzer, which btw would cost thousands of dollars rather than $9.95 for some plastic toy from Fisher-Price. This is toy for big boyz who are playing with millions of dollars (our money).
For sure, it would be more accurate than by just looking at the visibles with naked eyes. This little thingy, even though not accurate enough to produce results that could be included in NI-43-101 documents, the device could tell if the visible stuff (on the surface) is gold or something else, and the order of magnitude of the grade of the metal, hence would provide valuable guidance to the guys in the field who cannot just sit there waiting for the lab results, or just drill blindly for the sake of doing something.
