I'm not convinced that K was the linchpin in this deal. surely they were involved and had some influence but perhaps only to the extent that Sage was better than other potential merger partners to own shares in. Note that Puma hired a toronto company to find "opportunites to maximize shareholder value" (back in Feb 09)
K acquired the shares in Puma when they bought Bema Gold in '07. Puma had to write off it's only property at the end of '08 and was desparate to find a buyer ....
Have Sage & Puma been talking for a long time? who knows, but it seems more of a marriage of convenience than anything ... Sage got cash and Puma got value for their cash without the expense of winding down and shareholders have a stake in a new venture. All we can say for certain is Sage was a better bed partner than any other suitor ... and K had a roll in that for sure.
What happens next? who knows
