If everyone had an electric car in Ontario and they all plugged them into the electrical power grid in Ontario to recharge their batteries they would blow the power grid and there would be a massive brown out. I seem to recall around 5 or 6 years ago all of the power went out in the American north eastern states and Southern Ontario in a massive brown out which lasted for many hours. The power grids of many states and provinces in their current state are nearly at their maximum output and simply could not handle the huge drain put on these systems by electric cars in addition to electric public transit systems etc.

Also, you cannot drive to Florida in a couple of days or across Canada or the USA in a short period of time while on vacation which will limit the interest in initially buying electric cars to urban usage only. If you can only travel 160 miles a day maximum, it will take forever to get to where you want to go.

There are also other huge investments necessary as well. For example, in Western Canada and Northern Ontario many workplaces and homes and shopping malls currently have electric outlets already installed outside for people to plug the bloc heaters of their cars into in the winter when the temperature drops down below freezing. Employees or the public at present have ready access to power outlets. However, in provinces and states with warmer climates there are no outside electric outlets to plug into when you are working or shopping or travelling which will require huge investments of private or public cash.

Then there is the issue of plugging into electric outlets to recharge the cars batteries. In many states and provinces the electricity comes from coal burning or natural gas burning power plants. How does this reduce emissions? Especially if more coal and natural gas burning plants need to be built? Nuclear reactors are the only emission free source of electricity at present and I don't see any new nuclear plants currently being constructed anywhere in North America. Do you?

Oil wil be the main source of power for cars and trucks and ships and planes for many years to come. Relax.

Best Wishes; Scott
