Romania and Hungary could receive 30 million euros for the Arad-Szeged pipeline to interconnect the gas grid of the two countries, as part of the financing package of 3.5 billion euros for investment in energy infrastructure proposed on Wednesday by the European Commission to the member states.
As a result of the recent gas crisis between Russia and Hungary and as an answer to the financial crisis, the European Commission formulated the proposal to allocate 5 billion euro from the EU budget which was not spent on energy projects, development of broadband networks and ecology projects of rural development.
Most of the money – 3.5 billion euro – could be for gas pipelines and electricity grids, marine wind energy projects and CO2 storage technology. Among the projects selected by the European Commission is the interconnecting gas pipeline between Hungary and Romania to whom the European executive allotted 30 million euros, if the member states approve these proposals during the Spring Summit of 19-20 March.
The total value of gas grid interconnection from Romania and Hungary was estimated in the autum of last year at 73 million euros, the Romanian party investment to be worth 35 million euros.
The total length of the pipeline will be 109 km and will have a diameter of 700 mm. On Romanian territory, the interconnecting pipeline has an approximate length of 62 km between Horia ( near Arad) and Csanadpalota ( Nadlac) at the border between Romania and Hungary.
The pipeline will be finalized until January 1 2010 and will have a capacity of 4.4 billion cubic metres per year, corresponding to an average flow of 500,000 cubic metres/hour, according to the data of the Transgaz officials.
