just be thorough, I emailed Sasha Asgary on this and here is his response:

"The Canadian Clearing and Depository Service (CDS - http://www.cds.ca/) is where most of all equities are registered in Canada. Most brokerages, banks and investements trusts hold their securities at the CDS in trust for the beneficiary. It's just a mechanism of the Canadian market."
