I think it's called 'slotting'.

When they have a buy and sell order they 'middle it' ( Like in football betting ) and they make money on the 'juice'. Of course it's 'illegal' but very hard to catch.

I still go through a 'normal' broker ( By normal broker, I mean they really have only their own interest at heart ) old style and pay much more than the $8.00 but in honesty, they do the same thing. I've waited for hours for him to call back and confirm the order. It's 'never' been in my favor..ever. The only good thing was I traded on days when there was no news, hence less action or volitity. The difference was minimal, but it still reeks of dishonesty.

My whole point of this reply is that, there aren't alot of choices when they all have a 'me first' attitude.
