Forgive me, but you are viewing priorities as a "grown up" with all the attendant baggage that that entails. Teens have, in my experience and opinion, no such concerns - if 1 has it, they all MUST have it. I give you the growth in ringtones as an example, where the kids would sooner buy one than spend their allowance on lunch at school.
As the research I linked showed, it becomes a status symbol, a necessity to maintain street cred and peer acceptance. Who is going to be the parent that denies their teen child a dollar here and a dollar there?
