Ignoring the different media, video vs text, don't both have a program which take different formats, standardize them, assess which format the recipient is using, then deliver the information in that format?

If both programs were written in Java, say, can one not be used to augment the other - shouldn't the software developers be talking to each other about integrating some or all of their respective program to improve that of the other?
