As of Aug 2008, International Ferro Metals was proceeding with a major expansion of it's plant in South Africa. They are more than doubling the output from 267,000t/y to 665,000t/y by building three new 66mva furnaces that will require a total operational power requirement of 162 mva. This appears to be a bit of a problem for them due to supply. Apparantly there are periods of constrained power in South Africa when furnace capacity has to be reduced. Included in this infrastructure is a new 700,000t/y pelletizing, sintering and beneficiation plant. The original cost of this expansion was 3.2 billion rand but has increased to 4.15 billion ($532million CDN) This is an expansion and not new infrastructure like ours but it does give some idea of the scale we are talking about for the plant components. The encouraging thing is despite inflation and worries over power, this project is proceeding. They are also doing a feasibility on increasing mine output. Obviously, even though it is not being appreciated here in North America, this is testament to the huge potential of our chromite deposit.
