Your reference to steam engines of old brings to my mind the movie "The Quiet Man", starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045061/).
Where as there is the possibility that somone is paying the conductor to hold the train because there are more passengers coming, as per the movie sometimes somone runs up and mentions that there is a fight taking place ( Ring of Fire ) so the conductor and most on board abandon the train and run to the distraction.
We are being distracted to sell while they occupy OUR seats.

Does that not ring with some familiarity?
