Government of Canada investment to strengthen business growth and competitiveness in Northwestern Ontario

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, September 26, 2012 – The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment to promote economic growth, support business-to-business networking and foster mining opportunities in the region, such as the Ring of Fire.

“The Government of Canada is proud to invest in initiatives, such as the Prosperity Northwest Conference, that enable businesses to connect with hundreds of potential customers, fostering development opportunities and building synergies across the region,” said Minister Clement. “The event, which is taking place today, will focus on the mining industry and infrastructure needs of Northwestern Ontario, helping to set the stage for growth.”

FedNor funding of $50,000 is helping the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce to host the one-day regional event featuring a keynote speaker, presentations, workshops and round table discussions. The conference is expected to attract approximately 400 stakeholders, including representatives from First Nations, small businesses, economic development organizations and government.

“Thanks to FedNor’s support, we are confident that this event will lay the groundwork for new business partnerships, open the door to new markets and increase business activity in the region,” said Harold Wilson, President, Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce.

The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
