The Trudeau government lays out its agenda for its first session of Parliament today with the speech from the throne.

The document is a general outline of the government's legislative plans for this sitting, which is only supposed to last about a week.

One of the key themes is expected to be reconciliation with Canada's Aboriginal Peoples.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett says it's clear Prime Minister Trudeau has signalled the importance of addressing grievances of aboriginals.

Trudeau has said he will address a special meeting of chiefs on Tuesday that is being hosted by the Assembly of First Nations.

The gathering that falls a week ahead of the final report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission probing Canada's dark residential school legacy.

Trudeau has promised to act on all 94 recommendations put forward by the commission, including setting up an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.

The throne speech will also touch on the Liberals' promise to raise taxes on Canada's biggest breadwinners, while easing the burden on middle-income earners.
