Trudeau signals more power for First Nations over economic development
Prime minister backs UN declaration that requires ‘full, prior and informed consent’ for projects
Archie Patrick, chief of the Stellat’en First Nation near Vanderhoof, said he’s optimistic that Canada is on the verge of a historic shift. “I see this as potentially the foundation of some real development in our territory and improvement in our lives.”
Shane Gottfriedson, the Assembly of First Nations’ B.C. regional chief, said there is “excitement brewing” over Trudeau’s agenda.
Praising the provincial Liberal government for its willingness to work with the B.C. First Nations leadership over the past decade, he called on the business community to engage in more effective consultations with First Nations.
“We’re not opposed to major developments in our territories,” he said. But “industry has a huge responsibility in playing a role in development that benefits our people. … We can be the best damn partner you’ve ever had in development, or we can be your worst damn enemy.”
