Message: Re: Inuvik-to-Tuk highway will complete Canada’s road network coast to coast

Bit off topic but some may find it interesting. I was in Inuvik 2 years ago and took a camper down the Dempster Highway to Whitehorse and then on to Skagway Alaska and return. The Dempster Highway is named after the RCMP Inspector who found the famous Lost Patrol of the RCMP who perished in trying to return to Dawson City, they lost their way and are all buried at Fort MacPherson NWT, one of the communities along the Dempster . Last year I flew into Tuktoyaktuk and saw the constructon crews working on the highway. They can only work in Winter as they are building on permafrost. A couple of interesting things about Tuk, The Community has a natural deep freezer for all residents with a gigantic cavern dug into the permafrost and you take a ladder down about 30 feet and every family in the communty has their own allocated space for deep freeze. Also Tuk was one of the original sites of the DEW (Distant Early Warning Line) built betwen 1953-57 when North America had a great fear of a Soviet Invasion over the North Pole targeting North America. The site was de-commissioned in 1993 and I had a tour of the site and it just looks like they just walked away from it. The radars, buildings, etc. are still all on site. Of course in the Summer, you have 24 hour dayslight as opposed to Winter when darkness is the norm round the clock. Great Country and people in the Arctic. rj
